The only option I am finding locally for the roll roofing material has the granules all the way to both edges. I am familiar with the kind that has a 2-inch selvage edge. How does one apply the type where there is no selvage edge? Do I still overlap at the 2-inches from row to row?

It took me a long time to find this when I did a small shed this summer.

Seems like when using granules that cover the whole surface, your supposed to use exposed nails. (yuk!).

Consider an ice and water underlayment like weatherlock G or Grace Ice and Water Shield. Lowe's has the former.

Or you can look for a peel and stick roll roofing product. Use with a peel n stick base sheet or if you prefer, use a nailable base sheet then use peel n stick cap sheet on top. One product to use in particular would be GAF/ELK Liberty Peel n stick. Use in temperatures above 40. Consult application instruction that can be found on their web site.

I have used this product in the past(20 years or so) and we had to

1) adhere the underside with adhesive

2) nail the top 2-3 inch under lap

3) apply roof cement to the entire seam overlapped by the next layer.

Today I use a torch down method and melt the materials to a fiberglass underlayment.

What I did:
Pt down Wealerlock G and ice and water shied.

I then got a rool of roof starter material. Nailied it down on the edges. It's basically roofing with no granules about 10" wide and come in about 34' lengths.

That was nailed on the edges. Now you can use roofing cement for everything including the laps. The laps would have granuals, but it looks nice.
