Hi all - live in an area with nothing but clay soil. Looking for ideas on growing grass. Any ideas?

Most grasses do not like clay so it is best to amend your soil. Your local extension service from the university should have a soil testing kit available. Test your soil to see what it needs other than some black dirt roto tilled into it. Your other option is this stuff Zoysiagrass (http://plantanswers.tamu.edu/turf/publications/zoysia.html)

Be ready for a long, long hard battle. I to have lived in a clay soil area before, and when I did get the grass to grow, sometimes it would die off again and be bare. So I just mowed and stirred up a lot of dust.

It may depend on where you live. Here in Michigan I used a grass called tall fescue. It is a special grass perfect for shade and clay yards. I put my seed down about 4 years ago and still looking great. When my neighbors yards are brown in summer from heat even when they use sprinklers twice a day, Mine still looks good without sprinklers, and water twice a week.
