View Full Version : Hampton Bay Fan with a mind of its own.

About a year ago our Hampton Bay ceiling fan began turning on and off on its own. The lights would turn off. Sometimes they would dim and then brighten first sometimes not. The fan would turn on or switch to a high speed. :o

Because it happened at the same time that our new neighbors moved into their new house, we assumed that they had the same fan and were controlling ours. We asked them about it. They do not have a ceiling fan of any kind.

Well, for the last year we have just lived with our fan acting as if it had a mind of its own. However, last month the fan completely gave out. We could no longer turn it on, off, faster, slower -- nothing. The light worked fine. It would dim brighten etc. as we directed with our remote. For two weeks there was nothing unusual happening with the fan. Two nights ago the fan kicked on by itself. We can now run the fan and light just fine and it also works by itself again.

I can come up with plenty of Paranormal explanations for the fan. I do enjoy X-Files. Does anyone have a logical electrical explanation and an idea of how to repair the fan?

I would carefully check all the connections to the fan including any wall switch it may have. If you have any trouble with other things on the same circuit, you might check clear back to the breaker box. Use your own judgment about messing with the breaker box or calling for help. The power for the fan may be fed through outlets or other lights on the circuit. Check those connections too. Check your voltage to the fan. It should be at least 110 volts. Electronic controls need stable power. Adding an 0.001 mfd capacitor across the power line might help, or buy a power line filter.

I also have a Hampton Bay Fan -- and it just recently started acting up. One night we awoke with the lights blaring and the fan on high. Today I've had the fan on low and it keeps cranking itself up to high. Have you found a solution?

I have found a friend who is an electrician. He is thinking that it could be a problem with a "switch" in side the fan. In the next week or two I will have him come out to take a look. He says that a new switch is easy to replace and only costs a few dollars.

I'll reply again after I find out.

I had the same "problem" with my fan in the past. In the middle of the night, the fan and lights would come on and awaken us. It turned out to be due to a timer function built into the remote to turn off the lights or fan after a set time. I hit the wrong button on the remote. In this case, it really "was a feature, not a bug" ;D The fix is to unset the timer functions to the fan/light.

This is a known problem with Hampton Bay fans. What you are seeing is a diagnostic mode from the circuit board on the wireless transmitter / receiver. The patter is usually dim, bright, on off x 4 and repeat. The simplest way to correct the problem is to turn off the circuit breaker / cut the power and the unit will reset.

Why is it going into diagnostic mode to begin with? Because the transmitter / receive has been hit with one too many power spikes from your local power company. Your best bet is to get a replacement transmitter / receiver from your local Home Depot, as it will happen more frequently as the unit ages and continues to get fried.

All power companies have constant spikes and drops that you may not be aware of.

I have a same problem with our fan and remote. When using the auto temperature mode, in the middle of the night the lights will either come on for a short moment or come on and stay on until I turn them off. It does not matter if the lights are dimmed or not, they come on 100% power. It does not happen at the same time every night and it does not happen every night.

We, too, have a Hampton Bay with a mind of its own, but we have a different problem. We bought 4 identical fans almost 6 years and 3 are working just fine. The "problem" fan just started (about a week ago) turning itself OFF. Sometimes it runs for hours before doing this, but other times it goes off in just a few minutes. It usually goes back on again with the remote -- but occasionally we have to wait a little while. Ours are all "The Redington II by Hampton Bay" with no lights.
Any suggestions would be most welcome!
Thanks so much!

If you purchased this hampton bay fan at home depot, all you have to do is take it down and take it back! Up until the last few years, Hampton Bay fans had a lifetime warranty with Home Depot. Ya don't really have to worry about a receipt as the model # the store needs is in the fan's motor housing. Although if it was ever on sale, you will get that sale price and not necessarily what you paid for it unless a receipt is present. The returns person will either give you a gift card or if they still carry it, they might even exchange it. :) No more "possesed "lighting! Believe me, I had to return a fan myself and the only hassle was getting my brother to come over to take down the old one and put up the new one. (My husband is NOT allowed near electricity!)

Many of the Remote fans come with default switch settings. Switch Transmitter and remote to unique code and try again. This eleminates any Neighbor Possibility.

Hampton Bay used to be this reasonable, but I have heard a lot of recent stories about them no longer accepting warranty returns in store. That is why I have been since directing everyone to contact Hampton Bay directly.
