I took the back off ans saw that the start button was connecting to the motherboard but no response. Could the motherboard be bad or what. I have no cluse. Please someone help me out with this.

The fact that you have no idea what is going on is critical. Do you have a volt/ohm meter.

If so, place the black lead from the meter onto the frame of the washer. Tale the red "Probe", and measure the DC voltage to Ground at both ends of the "Start" button.

If you see DC (12 or 24 VDC voltage at one side and 0 VDC at the other, press the start button and see if you get a flash reading or if your are using an analog meter a deflection to indicate that voltage got there.

There are several things going on here, I'd like to see a picture of what you saw inside the covers.

Another thing, if the top cover of your washer has a cover interlock, that is broken, you can press "Start" until the cows come home and nothing will happen. Check the inside of the top cover. Look for a plug set into the top cover with a peg sticking down.

If you find it, look immediately below it, you should see a hole the peg goes into. Put a long pencil into the hole and slide it down until to either hear a click or feel it push the interlock.

With the interlock made, press the start button and see if it works. If it does, scoot to the hardware store or a GE parts shop and get a new cover interlock actuator.

Also, you could wait for a better answer for a more qualified person than myself. That a DYI that I've done once or twice over the years. But I am not versed on modern equipment. Noah and I paid the powers that be tons on dinera just to get our first washer for the Ark!
