I got this lap top for Christmas and need someone to check it over. I am sending all the info about it. It is "slow". And the username is not mine--how do I change that? What can I put in it to go faster---or take out?

Gloria

You should do a clean format since it was someone else's previously.

Did it come with a format CD?

As a minimum here are something's to try:

FULLY patch it with Windows Update
Install Anti Virus, update and scan (AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1) is good and free)
Install Anti spyware, update and scan (A couple of good removal tools are Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) and Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/))
Defrag.

Should help with speed, although the machine spec are boardline for XP.

If you do have the discs that came with the system than a reinstall of XP would be the best course of action.
This will completely wipe the system and give you a clean slate to work on.

Quick How-To
Reinstall XP.
This is very simple:
Here's some instructions that should help:
*Look for message "booting from CD" usually located at the bottom of the screen. If you have a factory splash screen, press ESC to unload it.
*Press any Key when you see the prompt to 'Press Any Key"
*Setup will start copying files, if you need to install any third-party or RAID drivers press F6 at this time. The copying of files can take awhile.(leave this one)
*Next you will get the option to repair or enter setup, choose to enter setup. Press ENTER.
*Press F8 if you agree to the license.
*Setup will scan for previous Windows installations
*You want to delete all existing partitions, recreate the ones you want and then install a fresh copy of XP.

Leave to cook for 30-40 minutes
Then install any other Apps you need, like Office, etc.

Hope this helps

This is an old (AMD K6-2) machine. The K6-2 is Pentium 3 equivalent. Also you only have 128Mg of RAM which is barely enough to run Win XP. I would suggest going back to Win 98 on this machine. I had XP on a K6-2 machine and was very dissatisfied with performance.

I thank all for your advice. I am just a grandma who got this lap top for Christmas. Because we do not have the money for a new one--the used one came about. Just using it for play such as reading emails and going on the internet. That's why I asked if there is "things" I can take out or uninstall to make performance run faster. Have no way now of putting 98 on it. So was just looking for "smaller" idea's with what I have. Any more help will be appreciated.

Do you have a Senior center nearby? Many of them have computer classes and there is often some knowledgeable people to help. One of them might have a copy of Win 98Se to give you. And will help you reconfigure your PC. There really isn't a lot of software installed on the machine.
