(First apologies for my bad English: I'm Dutch and not a native English speaker).

I'm want to use a hard disk from my Linux server as an external USB hard disk for my Windows XP (Dell) laptop.
Working in Computer Management->Disk management, I can see the disk and it's partitioning, but that;s about it. It has no drive letter assigned, and al the options (assign new drive letter, format, etc.) are greyed out.
The hard disk jumpers are set to Master.

Can anyone help me out? (BTW: I can not use my Linux server anymore to re-format the disk. It passed away silently :rolleyes:... )

Linux uses a different file system than windows , so you need to format the hard disk as either fat32 of NTFS.

I know. But how do I format this disk? My Linux server is not available anymore and Windows doesn't give me the option.

Could use Windows disk management , Right click 'My Computer' Icon on the desktop--Manage---Disk management.
Pick your partition click Action--All Tasks---Delete Partition
You should then be able to make a new partition and format.
(my system is dual boot windows and linux , windows Disk management sees my linux partitions even though they don't get a drive letter when I boot into xp)
