The hottest love has the coldest end.
~ Socrates

I was never one to patiently pick up broken fragments and glue them together again and tell myself that the mended whole was as good as new. What is broken is broken -- and I'd rather remember it as it was at its best than mend it and see the broken places as long as I lived.

~ Margaret Mitchell

I can't forgive myself for not having seen this before. I feel remiss for not participating.

Here's my beginning offering:

If you always do what you always did,
You'll always get what you always got.

Don't let what you can't do interfer with what you can.

If you think you can or if you think you can't,
Either way you're right.

Live before you die, or you'll die before you live.

Life is like long division, only your pencil hasn't got an eraser.

Nothing worth doing is worth doing only half-way.

If you don't have time to do it right the first time,
How are you going to find time to do right the second time?

Perfection is an abstract, coldly rigid and impossible to attain
"ideal"-- but beauty exists all around us, it's only standard is that
It touches and move the ones who take time to truly behold it.
Walk in beauty, my friends ~ Van Gogh

I will do my ever best to lighten your load,
Lest mine seems to be all one should carry.

My name is a quote- friends are forever. And it's true. Your true friends, by what I mean... your true friends are the ones that are always sticking up for you, invite you to most places, share your thoughts and keep your most deepest secrets... never lets a boy get between you and her/him. You can say anything you want to them but yous till have boundries... she respects what you believe in (religion, beliefs etc), she/he doesn't care what you look like on the outside because they think that you're the most beautiful when you show your tru self (aka- personality)... the list is endless and I love my friends so much. Even though there gone they'll always be apart of me :)

I remember a number of years ago, I was having a very hard time in my life. I posted a bunch of inspirational quotes all around my back door so that I would see them when I was leaving to do whatever for the day. It did help having a visual of them!

"If all my friends were to jump off a bridge, I would not follow,
I would be at the bottom to catch them when they fall."
- Unknown

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit. ~Albert Schweitzer

Friends are those rare people who ask how you are and then wait for the answer. ~Author Unknown

When we honestly ask ourselves which person in our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions, or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain and touch our wounds with a warm and tender hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares. ~Henri Nouwen

If you're alone, I'll be your shadow. If you want to cry, I'll be your shoulder. If you want a hug, I'll be your pillow. If you need to be happy, I'll be your smile. But anytime you need a friend, I'll just be me. ~Author Unknown

Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion. ~Steel Magnolias

LEAN ON ME (Bill Withers)

Sometimes in our lives, we all have pain, we all have sorrow.
But if we are wise, we know that there's always tomorrow.
Lean on me, when you're not strong and I'll be your friend.
I'll help you carry on, for it won't be long 'til I'm going to need somebody to lean on.

Please swallow your pride, if have things you need to borrow.
For no one can fill those needs that you won't let show.

You just call on me brother when you need a hand.
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand.
We all need somebody to lean on.

Lean on me when you't not strong, and I'll be your friend.
I'll help you carry on, for it won't be long 'til I'm gonna' need somebody to lean on.

You just call on me brother if you need a friend.
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand.
We all need somebody to lean on.

If there is a load you have to bear that you can't carry.
I'm right up the road, I'll share your load if you just call me.

Call me ( if you need a friend)
Call me

I find myself at the close of an emotional weekend. A true roller coaster of emotions. By going home, I traveled not only distance, but also time. On Saturday morning, I left as a broken, hurting, sad woman - one that bore what I thought was the weight of the world on my tired shoulders. All I wanted to do was curl up under my shield and let the battle rage 'round me. I learned something this weekend. I learned a little more about myself and my resolve. I learned that my pain is not only mine, that my sorrow was shared, that my hurt was only the half to an unknown equation... and that equation was friendship.

I needed the time at home, the time walking the college grounds where I fell in love with my ex-fiance', the moments reliving my past, the quiet tears at my Father's grave, the pointless laughter at Mrs. Doubtfire with my Mom, the home-town church service, the reality check of being in my single canopy bed again, the reminder that although my past is laced with tears, sorrow, pain, and loss, that it is also colored with joy, happiness, fulfillment, and unimaginable hope.

Sitting in Newlin Hall at Centre College, listening to the beautiful strains of Yo Yo Ma's chamber music - sitting in some of the very seats that I once shared with the love of my life - I realized that, just as some of the notes were dissonant, resounding, and clashing against the plush tapestry of an Ivy League school, other notes floated above the audience, whispering of hope and resolution amidst the chaos of a modern chamber piece. I found myself lost in its strains, following the perfectly ordered randomness of the music... listening for the moment when it would change from its passionate dissolution to quiet peace.

I've found my balance once again. My balance between the ache and the peace, the pain and the healing, the sorrow and the joy. Long may it live in my heart, reigning over my emotions and outlook.

I only hope that I can give just a smidgen of my resolve and contentment to my dear friend who has found herself drowning in the chaos of her symphony. The difference between the music I heard yesterday and the dawning of today is that I am not simply sitting in the audience of her life, I'm sitting next to her, taking my bow to the strings of life and urging her on to a beautiful resolution and the sweet strains of peace.

(Forgive my ramblings, my friends, but I needed more than a few quotes this morning... I needed to paint a tapestry of my life before you, show you its colors, and let its chaotic beauty stand for you to see.)

Anybody can become angry - that is easy; but to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, and for the right purpose, and in the right way - that is not within everybody's power and is not easy.

My hope is to learn this and understand it so that my anger becomes healthy and hopefully one day, gone.

Friendship improves happiness, and abates misery, by doubling our joys, and dividing our grief
--Joseph Addison

The glory of friendship is not the outstretched hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration that comes to one when he discovers that someone else believes in him and is willing to trust him with his friendship.
--Ralph Waldo Emerson

We enjoy warmth because we have been cold. We appreciate light because we have been in darkness. By the same token, we can experience joy because we have known sadness.

:) There were 5 of us... so Mom didn't even take the time to call out the name... we just heard her talking some sort of language awfully loudly... we each ran in a different direction and the dogs in the neighborhood started to howl.

So... I had to actually "pick" my name when I was in 3rd grade... as my teachers couldn't say my real name (I'm one of dem forners). So I picked my first name.

Then, another kid in my class (another wonuvdem forners) had the same name as me... so I had to pick a middle name so school records wouldn't confuse us.

Today, my dear friends, I share my quotes with K. I believe we are on the same page today... a page of beginnings. Looking at the future, this new, unwritten chapter, this mysterious unknown. Last night I couldn't get this one phrase out of my head "The Land of Beginning Again" - from a poem I read a while back.... The Land of Beginning (http://www.poeticexpressions.co.uk/poems/Land%20of%20beginning%20again.htm)

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.” ~ Seneca

“What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.” ~T.S. Elliot

""There will come a time when you believe everything is finished. That will be the beginning." ~Louis L'Amour

""Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

A beginning does not always mean an ending; sometimes it simply means a re-focus, a new attempt at balance, an unwritten chapter. ~HistorianChick

I hope you all don't mind me throwing that one in. But it's a nice reminder to me that if Our Lord could have forgiven, especially during the time that he said that, shame on me for not doing the same if far less difficult circumstances.

May all of you have a beautiful day.

I'm in a Charles Bukowski mood today….enjoy!

“Some people never go crazy, What truly horrible lives they must live”

“Boring damned people. All over the earth. Propagating more boring damned people. What a horror show. The earth swarmed with them.”

“Sex is interesting, but it's not totally important. I mean it's not even as important as excretion. A man can go seventy years without a piece of a$$, but he can die in a week without a bowel movement.”

“Sometimes you just have to pee in the sink.”

“There is a time to stop reading, there is a time to STOP trying to WRITE, there is a time to kick the whole bloated sensation of ART out on its whore-a$$.”

An absolutely beautiful song.

"Upward Over the Mountain" Iron and Wine

Mother don't worry, I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed
Mother don't worry, I've got some money I saved for the weekend
Mother remember being so stern with that girl who was with me?
Mother remember the blink of an eye when I breathed through your body?

So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds, flying upward over the mountain

Mother I made it up from the bruise on the floor of this prison
Mother I lost it, all of the fear of the Lord I was given
Mother forget me now that the creek drank the cradle you sang to
Mother forgive me, I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you

So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons could be birds, taken broken up to the mountain

Mother don't worry, I've got a coat and some friends on the corner
Mother don't worry, she's got a garden we're planting together
Mother remember the night that the dog had her pups in the pantry?
Blood on the floor, fleas on their paws,
And you cried 'til the morning

So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds, flying always over the mountain

"I don't want to play anymore and you can't make me! It's my sandbox, darnit!"
~An HC/LifeH original~

(Yes, I have watched all of Buffy and own all of Angel)
Buffy: I'm cookie dough. I'm not done baking. I'm not finished becoming who ever the hell it is I'm going to turn out to be. I make it through this, and the next thing, and the next thing, and maybe one day, I turn around and realize I'm ready. I'm cookies. And then, you know, if I want someone to eat m- or enjoy warm, delicious, cookie me, then that's fine. That'll be then. When I'm done.
Angel: Any thoughts on who might enjoy - Do I have to go with the cookie analogy?
Buffy: I'm not really thinking that far ahead. That's kind of the point.
Angel: I'll go start working on the second front. Make sure I don't have to use it.
[starts to leave]
Buffy: Angel. I do. Sometimes, think that far ahead.
Angel: Sometimes is something.
Buffy: Be a long time coming. Years, if ever.
Angel: I ain't gettin' any older.

Hello all! I've been abundantly blessed by my virtual coffee chats with so many of you in this wonderful forum on Books and Literature! (The Relationship forum is fun too, but this is where inspiration comes from... "the stuff dreams are made of" :) )

Anyways... We all have favorite quotes, quotes that have touched a chord in our hearts and minds, quotes that have influenced our decisions, inspired us to go that extra mile, give us courage to face the day, and shown us what real living is like.

Lets share these divine inspirations with our little world here - on this little posting. I'll start with one of my all-time favorites....

Being a star-gazer myself and being the proud owner of a tempestuous personal history, this is one of my favorites - it reminds me that no matter what is swirling around me at a given time, I can get through it.

"The most tempestuous wind cannot disturb the quiet of the stars."

My passion has always been photography. But was going trough a rough time during the bussy Christmas portrait season. This quote made me in to what I am today, a freelance photographer and loving it.

"Photography is the art that allows us to cature time and even cheat death"
Caroline Cheavin Everitt

Also, this one inspired me"

"It is better to have tried and failed, then never to have tried at all"
(Author unknown)

Finally:

"Life is to short to be miserable. Only you can change your life"

OH, I just remembered another quote I heard that really made me think. Sorry I don't know who wrote it.

The object of life is not to arrive at our grave nicely preserved to be buried. It is to arrive 5 minutes late for your funeral, sliding in sideways, with a smile on your face and saying "Man, what a ride". Only then will you have lived.

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will find them gradually, without noticing it, and live along some distant day into the answer. ~Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet

I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. In honor of Howard Metzenbaum, Ohio Senator, who past away last night in his home. He was a cantankerous firebrand who didn't need a microphone to hold a full auditorium spellbound while dropping rhetorical bombs on big oil companies, the insurance industry, savings and loans, and the National Rifle Association, to name just a few favorite targets.

“Give me a break, this move screams politics”

"No, we?re not looking at how to control criminals.... We?re talking about banning the AK-47 and semi-automatic guns."

This conversation is a must read and good stuff...

Senator Metzenbaum to Senator Glenn: "How can you run for Senate when you've never held a "real job?"

Senator Glenn: "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions. I was in the Space Program. It wasn't my checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was not a nine to five job, where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank. I ask you to go with me ...as I went the other day ... to a Veterans Hospital and look those men - with their mangled bodies - in the eye, and tell THEM they didn't hold a job!

You go with me to the Space Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows and orphans of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee ... and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their DADS didn't hold a job. You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch those waving flags. You stand there, and you think about this Nation, and you tell ME that those people didn't have a job? I'll tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men - SOME MEN - who held a REAL job. And they required a dedication to a purpose - and a love of country and a dedication to duty - that was more important than life itself. And their self-sacrifice is what made this country possible.

I HAVE held a job, Howard! --- What about you?"

But oh! The blessing it is to have a friend to whom one can speak fearlessly on any subject; with whom one's deepest as well as one's most foolish thoughts come out simply and safely. Oh, the comfort - the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person - having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away. ~Dinah Craik, A Life for a Life, 1859

I go by the saying that

"the only stupid questions are the ones that never get asked"

I am an administrator on a bird website with members from all over the world,
However when first joiining the people that don't have much experience of birds are always to afraid to ask questions as they think of them as stupid or they don't want to be seen to ask a stupid obvious question,

In my opinion an answer is only obvious if the person knows the information, to somebody who wants help and doesn't know, if they don't ask they never will know,

I always tell them that no matter how big or small or how stupid a question may seem to them, that the only stupid questions are the ones that never get asked...

If you don't ask you don't get the answer and it is better to ask a question than not know the answer.. and may cause something to go wrong,

I will answer any question I know the answer to and encourage anybody else to do the same, as what seems stupid to one person is quite often not...
If you want to know something and do not ask the question then in my eyes , it is stupid not to ask for help or guidance in order to solve the problem,

or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back,

Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her only that she is gone,
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back.
Or you can do what she'd want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.”

- not to get all capitalistic with this one, its more about finding the power in yourself to enrich your life with what you choose for yourself. Wealth in happiness, in health, in security, etc... can come from within even when outside sources block your way. All you can do is all you can do.

"You are obstinate and always wrong"
- a quote from a fortune cookie my wife gave me from her meal. She didn't understand why I was upset when she gave be her prized cookie half dipped in chocolate and I pulled the message out.

"Absence of proof is not proof of absence"
- lots of ways to spin this. The scientist in me uses this to understand what we know compared to what we believe or what we don't understand. Obvious spiritual overtones can be seen as well.

Lorelai: Michel - the phone!
Michel: Yes. It rings.
Lorelai: Can you answer it?
Michel: No. People are particularly stupid today. I can't talk to any more of them.
_______________
Luke: She's not here yet.
Lorelai: Okay! Well, you'll have to entertain me 'til she gets here. Ok Burger Boy, DANCE!
Luke: Will you marry me?
Lorelai: What?
Luke: Just looking for something to shut you up.
_______________
Babette: Oh, and just you wait 'til spring. You're going to wake up one morning, walk out, and pow - color coming out of your yin-yang! I'll see you girls tomorrow. [goes into her house]
Lorelai: I'm going to have color coming out of my yin-yang.
Rory: Good then, finally you'll be able to keep a man.

I thought that was a line from the poem by Roy Croft... but I could be mistaken...

Recognized it, because it is the definition of love to me...

Love

I love you
Not only for what you are,
But for what I am
When I am with you.

I love you,
Not only for what
You have made of yourself,
But for what
You are making of me.

I love you
For the part of me
That you bring out;

I love you
For putting your hand
Into my heaped-up heart
And passing over
All the foolish, weak things
That you can't help
Dimly seeing there,

And for drawing out
Into the light
All the beautiful belongings
That no one else had looked
Quite far enough to find

I love you because you
Are helping me to make
Of the lumber of my life
Not a tavern
But a temple.

Out of the works
Of my every day
Not a reproach
But a song.

I love you
Because you have done
More than any creed
Could have done
To make me good.
And more than any fate
Could have done
To make me happy.

You have done it
Without a touch,
Without a word,
Without a sign.

You have done it
By being yourself.
Perhaps that is what
Being a friend means,
After all.

It is inhumane, in my opinion, to force people who have a genuine medical need for coffee to wait in line behind people who apparently view it as some kind of recreational activity. I bet this kind of thing does not happen to heroin addicts. I bet that when serious heroin addicts go to purchase their heroin, they do not tolerate waiting in line while some dilettante in front of them orders a hazelnut smack-a-cino with cinnamon sprinkles. ~Dave Barry

I really like a lot of the older pop and rock tunes. One song that I started to listen to again recently, is by Dan Folgelberg who passed away not all that long ago. It's the song "Leader of the Band." It is about his father who was a high school band director at a school that is not too far away from my home in the state where I live.

Among the other fine lyrics in that song, a couple that really stand out for me are the following:

"A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate..."

(Found at, http://www.lyricsfreak.com/d/dan+fogelberg/leader+of+the+band_20035787.html (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/d/dan+fogelberg/leader+of+the+band_20035787.html) )

The above quote speaks volumes to me in it's profundity and truth!

If you know how hard it is for any one to make it in the music industry and/or to teach music in some way in schools or privately, I'm sure that you know exactly where I'm coming from with those few words speaking volumes!

I have a very strong work ethic. I do my job to the best of my ability and am willing to help others around me even when it puts a time crunch on me. There are a few that I love and have touched my life.

When I was a teenager, ny best friend's mom used to write quotes on the bathroom mirror of their house. A few have stuck with me:

"People are like tea bags. They're not worth much till they've been through some hot water."

"Success is getting up one more time than you fell down."

Now my personal favs are:

"I'm not who you think I am. I am not who I think I am. I am who I think you think I am."

There are many more, but these are the ones that stick out in my head.

I had to spread the rep , but I love this story :) It's so refreshing hearing stories about kids being polite but genuine about it :p

Friend, I tried "Rate this Answer" but said I had to spread the rep first also. Seems you have become one of my angels on this site. About the time I need your comments or posts, there you are. Thank you!

Thank you to all of you. I guess God thinks I need lots of angels lately and His provision is terrific. :p Thank you for being willing participants!

It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.

I don't understand. Why are we saying goodbye?

HistorianChick
Jul 9, 2008, 06:33 AM
Awww... I needed that.

Something that I've known was going to happen for a while happened. It was right, the "best thing", the "good thing"... but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt a wee bit. :)

(This is one of those partitioned off parts of the heart that I've talked about before... and actually what helped me find AMHD... )

ISneezeFunny
Jul 9, 2008, 06:37 AM
In that case...

How do I say goodbye to what we had?
The good times that made us laugh
Outweigh the bad.

I thought we'd get to see forever
But forever's gone away
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

I don't know where this road
Is going to lead
All I know is where we've been
And what we've been through.

If we get to see tomorrow
I hope it's worth all the wait
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

And I'll take with me the memories
To be my sunshine after the rain
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

And I'll take with me the memories
To be my sunshine after the rain
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

HC, if you need to talk about it we're here. You can PM, you can email, or you can let it all out here on the boards. You know that we're here for you, and we love you so much. I hope your day gets better, and that you find your smile.

It's a situation that I got myself into - its what brought me to AMHD (and for that I'm glad) - that could have been awful... but in my perpetual-Barbie-girl-optimist way, it avoided its potential landslide capabilities and turned into one of the most amazing friendships I've ever experienced...

But today, I had to say goodbye. I'm truly smiling because it happened, but aching because its gone. But it was right and for the best and nothing can convince me of anything different.

Losing a friend is terribly hard, but when it's the right thing to do, it makes it logical, but doesn't stop the hurt.
