Please can someone tell me how to get melted and now hardened candle wax out of my bathtub drain?

Use a box cutter or something to scrap the excess built up part out.
Boil a large pot of really hot boiling water and dump it on the wax.
Keep doing that until it is all gone.
Be careful not to get burned or spill the water.

What if the wax is really far down in the drain? Is there a chemical that will dissolve the wax?

I would try pouring the boiling water down the drain first to get the worst of it out and then you might try some drain cleaner. Ask at a hardware. They might suggest a lye drain cleaner. You can't use that in plastic pipes.
The one that I buy at the hardware comes in a white plastic bottle with red lettering and it is in a plastic bag... never paid attention to the name of it.

You can use hot water, but I would suggest you take the waste pipe, apart and replace it
You could risk pushing it down further and really messing up the rest of the waste pipes

Nohelp's idea is the better bet. The wax will melt and flush completely away with bucket of boiling water, follow that with about 10 minutes of your hotest tap water into the tub. Do not use lye, Draino or any other drain cleaner for wax.
