I just got a new wooden dresser and something has been sat on it and has ate through the gloss finish and I have tried to put stain on it but it won't absorb what do I need to do t fix this problem? Can anyone help me?

Have you sanded it down to remove all of the old varish and stain.

If it's a new dresser, then chances are that it is a lacquer finish. It might be a polyurethane finish, but that's unlikely if it might be a mass-produced production piece since it is new. Don't really know that, though.

Do you know what kind of finish is on the piece? How perfect do you want the finish to look? If you are using and oil or water-based stain and trying to put it on the top of the dresser where there is still some existing finish because it hasn't be stripped with a liquid or gel stripper of some kind, and then sanded down, those two types of stains aren't going to soak into the wood.

If you are just wanting this to be touched-up, Sherwin-Williams makes a lacquer-based stain that will work. It will dry quickly, even on the top of an existing finish. I like to use this type of stain in situations where the finish may need to be touched-up or rejuvenated. I also use it for most of my major refinishing jobs. Sometimes I will use an oil-based stain and maybe even a water-based one. It really all depends on the color that is desired in the end.

A low-solids clear coat finish using Deft Lacquer is also great to use for touch-up on top of new stains and existing finishes.
