I had to reinstall my operating system, (2000 Prof) and when I did I lost all sound and the wizard says the system has no sound device installed. I have no discs to install the device. What can I do?

Yes, I do.

Look in Device Manager to see if the card make and model show up. Most likely it won't but worth a try. You'll need to know what sound card you have because you can then download and install the proper drivers for it.

Also, if u have an integrated sound card, the drivers should be found on your mainboard CD.
