Hi

My dad had dual citizenship, holding a South African and Portuguese passport. He died 7 years ago and therefore I could not confirm if the citizenship is still active. Is it possible for me to apply for citizenship in Portugal due to decent or not since he is deceased. If it is how do I confirm whether he did not denounce his Portuguese citizenship.

Thanks

Ozayr

Dear Ozayr,

If your father was helding dual citizenship, this means that he has not lost his Portuguese citizenship.

The best way to confirm this is by requesting an updated Birth Certificate of your father in Portugal, because then this information will come annotated on it.

Considering that your father had not lost his Portuguese citizenship, you are eligible to apply for the Portuguese citizenship even if you father is deceased.

All you have to do is to register his marriage to your mother (if he was not married in Portugal ) and his death in Portugal.

Only after that is that you can submit your application.
