I live in Ontario Canada. I financed a car in January 2004. Though unforeseen circumstances, could not afford to continue to make payments and the car was repossessed in Feb 2005. I moved at the beginning of May of the same year, and never received anything from the finance company to that point. A couple of weeks ago at Law firm contacted me and said that I have to appear in court because the car wasn't pay for, and said that I owe the full amount of the loan because they weren't able to sell the car. I don't know anything about the law, but I did research on the internet about the law firm and there was numerous things saying that the particular Law Firm was known for sending out false payment requests and for trying to collect on debts that the Statue of limitations was up on. The papers that the firm sent to me, didn't have the Finance company's name on it anywhere. All it says is that that we owe the Law firm money for the account. Could this be legitimate? What should I do?

If you have received a court date before a judge, then go to Court on that date.

Otherwise, ignore it.

Them sending you a letter saying you HAVE to go to Court sounds fishy to me as well.

If you have received no summons, and this letter did not indicate a time or place, ignoring it would be fine.

If you really want, you can check with the Court to see if someone has tried to serve you court papers.
