View Full Version : Tile under carpet?

The previous owners of my townhome were big into tile. Master bedroom has that multicolored slate looking tile. My tile guy was amazed (retiled a bathroom floor for me) - said he'd never seen that in a bedroom before. In this room, I've got area rugs to keep my feet warm! Truth be told, it looks quite nice in there. Several other rooms are all tile - in fact, there's only one room in the whole house that has carpet.

For additional feet-warming and to make some rooms more living-friendly, I'd really like carpet-- Is it possible to install carpet over the tile, say on mhy first level/basement or in one of my other bedrooms?

Thanks,
M.

No problem at all. Carpet is often installed over concrete... so installing over tile should not be any different.

I'm no pro, so hang tight to see another opinion or three.

I work at Lowe's (10+ years). Confirm that all the tile is tight to the subfloor. Repair any loose tiles. There is no reason carpet cannot be installed over the tile. A good padding will mask any grout pattern gaps. A good carpet installer will know how to do this. Ask a few local carpet stores and a Lowes/Home Depot to come over to measure and provide a quote.
