My speedometer on a honda civic 91 is not working any suggestions

. Check all under-dash fuses with a test light or multimeter:

. Check for codes, by jumping the Service Check Connector with a paper clip.
. Check Variable Speed Sensor (VSS) on top of the transmission.

Sorry for sounding naïve but what does this vss look like and does this not have anything to do with the speedometer cable or something of that sort

There should be a 3-P electrical connector going to the VSS, not a cable. It's mounted with two bolts to the transmission.

If only the speedometer does not work, but the odometer and trip meter do, then inspect the speedometer and printed circuit board.
