It looks like there's a considerable spread, depending on the type of magazine and the nature of the article. Here's an FAQ page from About Freelance Writing that gives a range between $0.01 per word and $2.00 per word or more:

And here's a list of common rates for editorial freelance writers that gives a range of $40 to $125 per hour for writing (but that includes many types of writing other than magazine articles):
