Hello,
I filed my taxes last year jointly as I was married and applied for my wife's itin number (I'm on h1b and she is on h4). IRS complained that there was problem with the
w7 and processed my tax return without the itin number for my wife. So I got my tax return less by $500. Can I refile my 2006 tax return and my 2007 with the w7, so that I can reclaim the lost $500.
Thanks

You need to amend your 2006 return by filing Form 1040X with the W-7. The amendment will add your wife's personal exemption PLUS double your standard deduction from $5,150 to $10,300.

Go to the IRS website and look up their listings of "Certified Acceptance Agents". They will be able to expedite the w-7, and be able to call the IRS and find out exactly what the problem was, initially.

Barbaruba7, how much is the normal fee of a Certified Acceptance Agent?

Why bother? If you can read the instructions, you can prepare the W-7 yourself.
Then take it to a local IRS office to have the passport photocopy certified as a true copy, They will also check to make sure the W-7 is correct.
Then submit it with an amended return (Form 1040X), and you are good to go!

Why bother?
I wanted to know this for my knowledge. Also if it is a small amount it may be worth spending in some cases.

To be truthful, I do not know if there is a fee charged by a Certified Acceptance Agent.
I charge a nominal fee of $30 to prepare the Form W-7, if that gives you any reference.
