Hi,

New here so I hope I get it right.
I have a Yardmachine ride on mower with a Briggs & stration 16HP vanguard motor (single) 280777. When I try to start it, it run really rough and blow a lot of smoke and oil from the exhaust.

I cleaned the carb and checked the soleniod and all seems fine, replaced and still won't run properly, idles rough and when I get it some revs it dies. But when I remove the wires to the carb soleniod it runs smooth with no smoke or oil but then stops.

Someone told me it was electrical, any ideas that may help?

Regards

Gary

Confusing at best. But I will try to help you. The fuel solenoid is electrical, and when you remove the wires to it, the engine should die immediately. Have you tried to adjust the carb?

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, well I finally got it running after cleaning the carby again, but it runs rich on idle but revs OK. After mowing for about 20 minutes it started run rough again then it started to smoke and rattle.

Then I noticed flames coming out of the air cleaner so I tried to turn off the mower but it kept running, so I pulled off the plug lead still kept running. It finally stopped when I pulled the throttle back, but when I try to start it now it rattles and only fire a cople of times and dies.

I think I may have done some serious damage to the tappets which I will check later, could the carby need a major overhaul for it to do this or should I replace it?

Regards

Gary

Pay particular attention to the fuel valve in the carby and make sure the fuel system is clean.

It appears the carb is flooding. Gunk in the fuel valve is a likely culprit. Hopefully you removed it to clean it.
