the answer is simple really.5(the square root of y)=y is because y is to the 0 power and anything times the 0 power equals the # you were multiplying or in your case a letter and the square root of y is the same thing as saying the square root of 1 it equals 1 or in your case y... so y divided by y is y times y to the o power =y!!

two answers. Zero is obviously one of them since y=0 makes both sides 0.

5\sqrt {y}=y \\
5 {y^{\frac 1 2}}=y \\
5=\frac y {y^{\frac 1 2}} \\
5=y^1 {y^{-\frac 1 2}} \\
5=y^{1-\frac 1 2} \\
5=y^{\frac 1 2} \\
5^2=y \\
25=y

check

5\sqrt {25}=25 \\
5*5=25
