I am installing an electric stovetop. The one I removed had 4 wires.. red, black,white, and bare copper. The new one has 3.. black, red, and bare.. from what I have read here, the old system is a 220v/110v system... I assume that I hook up red to red, black to black, bare to ground. How should I deal with the 110v leg. Should I just put a cap on it? Do I need to disconnect it at the box? :confused:

Capping the white wire with a wire nut sized to fit will be fine, you do not need to disconnect this at the panel. The red/red and black/black is fine. Make sure these connections are good and tight, a large amount of power will go through and a loose connection will be bad.

Is this cooktop hardwired or is it plugged in. I find it odd that the old one had 4 and the new has 3.

I have the opposite problem stated here. Old is 3 wire, new is 4 wire.
How is this handled?
