She can try evening primrose or borage oil some recommend taking the two alternating.
Also Dong Quai works for some people Howstuffworks "Dong Quai: Herbal Remedies" (http://health.howstuffworks.com/dong-quai-herbal-remedies.htm)
Also black cohosh Black Cohosh (http://www.rd.com/content/openContent.do?contentId=1509) watch out for possible side effects with this.

She may have a different type of PMS (pre menstral syndrome) it is called PDS I believe. Or she has a wicked infection that's been over looked- has she been to a regular gyno? If not, She MUST- the hospital only tests for certain things. You can become sterile if not treated. Its also possible she may have some type of VD, in some cases claymidia will cause horrid pain before a cycle- however; there are several VD strains that cause the pain.
Where is the pain she is having? Lower, above the vaginal area? Or her lower back/ mid thorax or etc?

Your girlfriend needs to be examined by a OB/GYN to be properly diagnosed. She could be suffering from endometriosis, or something even more serious.
The ER will only treat her symptoms and will not properly diagnose her.
She should be having yearly checkups by now if the two of you are sexually active. So have her discuss this with her treating physician.
Oh, and to Buymyflorida, you were close, LOL, PMDD... While this is more painful than PMS, the symptoms focus more on mental and emotional.

Like the above posts said, make sure she is getting regular checkups. If the doctors determine that she is healthy, have her try to avoid nicotene (if she smokes) and caffeine. When I quit smoking and drinking coffee, my cramps weren't as bad as before. But, like I said before, you have to get her to the doctor first to rule out any health problems first.
