Our kitchen sink (with disposal) is clogged. The clog is not from the disposal side of the sink, but the other side of the sink. I've cleaned the ptrap and even flushed water on the drain sticking out of the house. This worked temporarily but now when we shower on the 2nd floor, water would come out of the drain from the kitchen sink. Its gross and it stinks. I placed bleach which helped with the odor and we're not using that shower for now. Do I call a roto rooter or is there some remedy I can try first? I've put vinegar/baking soda... the house is just 5 yrs old. I'm worried it might be a clog in the sewer line?

Another question is the hot water in the kitchen sink doesn't seem to work. Someone told me the water heater may be too far, but its not. The shower gets water heater quite fast and its on the 2nd floor so why are the kitchen sink downstairs don't get it? Thank you in advance!

I am not a plumber but I am a home owner.

The first step I would take is to take a plumber's helper (that's better known as a plunger) and see if rapid repetitive plunges can push the blockage out into the main drain.

If that fails, my next step is a plumbers snake. I have an electrical one that cost about $125. However, you can purchase them for much lower if you get a mechanical or "Arm strong" (meaning your strong arms) snake at almost every hardware store on the planet.

You want a snake that has prongs on the end and that allows you to spin a handle which in turn rotates the prongs.

Slowly insert the prong end into the drain and work it as far down as you can, keep rotating the handle. Once you hit the clog, the snake's forward motion will stop. As you work you way through the clog it will be slow going until you pop clear of the clog.

I forgot to mention that the first thing I did was to use a plunger (maybe I'm doing it wrong since it's a double sink and only the other part of the sink is clogged). But I did use the plunger on both sides of the sink repeatedly. It seems like it helps a little but the sink still floods up.
When I run the disposal the water on the other side comes up. I don't think it's the disposal.

I bought a mechanical snake today but now I realized the sink has a "built in" drain, is there an easy way to remove this or do I have to unscrew everything from the bottom?
