Ok, last week I was at work and I got a phone call, something came up and I ended up leaving only a half hour early.

I left my boss a note telling him I left early because of a personal emergency back home that I had to tend to ASAP.

The next day, he calls me up to find out what the "personal emergency" was. I kindly replied it dealt with me, and nothing to do with him,so he has no need to know. He told me "well, you could have waited that last half hour." I told him No, I couldn't, primarily because it is a 25 minute drive home anyway. He began arguing with me saying that because I didn't call him from work to let him know, that he has the right to know what the emergency was. I finally hung up on him before I said anything I might regret. Ten minutes later, he calls my girlfriends cell. She was with me, so she put it on speakerphone and he first said "Hi this is ______ from ________ is _______ there?" I shook my head telling her to say I wasn't, so she said no, He then said: "Well, the other day, he left work early, he left me a note saying it was because of an emergency, do you know what that emergency was"? She told him to call me, and he said he did, but couldn't get a hold of me. She told him to keep trying to get a hold of me, then hung up.

I asked the other guys (the other guards) if he has done the same to them when they left early and they looked at me like I was crazy. They all said pretty much the same "He said it was ok to leave early as long as we left him a note explaining why we left early." Which is exactly what I did.

So it comes down to this, is my boss just picking on me or what?

Where any place I have ever been a guard, if you left before your shift without permission ( not leaving a note) but asking and getting someone to say yes, you would be fired on the spot for deserting your job.

I too am a security supervisor. Per my company policies, I have no right to ask such a personal question. Legally I don't think your boss has the right too either...

Wow! I'm still picking up my mouth at "Ten minutes later, he calls my girlfriends cell." I've never heard anything like this happening. The only time you're supposed to call next of kin is if there's some type of emergency and THAT PERSON'S NAME IS LISTED as the person to call.

I would have asked him why he called your girlfriend. I think it's illegal AND disturbing.

Because her number IS on the list of numbers to call.

I think he was out of bounds by calling your girlfriend, but he was within his authority to terminate you for leaving your position without notifying him directly. Instead of being upset with him for being nosy, you should be glad you still have a job.

It's personal to give him the reason, yet if he is really getting on you, I guess you should just make another emergency reason just to SURVIVE if it's too personal for u.. I mean, who could blame you for wanting it to be personal. Yet, he has slight rights to know why. I guess, what you need to do is just create a white lie. And I guess he is annoyed by your reasons cause emergency reason's sounds like an EXCUSE to him rather than knowing the content of it... soo, I hope he doesn't black list u!

Having been an employer, why shouldn't your boss have the right to know what your personal emergency was? How does he know that you just did not want to skip out? He wanted to make sure that this was an emergency and not some trumped up excuse. Maybe he thought you and your girlfriend just wanted some extra time. I don't know but you sound like you had something to hide from him. Just leaving him a note?? The very least you could have done was call him.

Hi can't force you to stay, you are short for 30min and he not paid you end of story! If you do it on daily basis that become a issue.
