A debt collection service constantly calls my fiancé and when he answers they hang up on him. We contacted the service yesterday numerous times and they were very rude and unprofessional. When we did finally get to talk to someone she said that there was a glitch in their system and the phones hung up automatically but later that night someone just happened to actually be on the other line of the phone when they called, after we said we would be contacting an attorney. They call about 20 times a day and this happens how can we get this to stop? It has gotten very out of hand and personally it is getting very annoying. He has told them that when he gets other things paid off he will be able to pay them but they just won't listen. Please help!

If they are getting too aggressive and using inapproprate language, record the calls and contact an attorney. There is a fine line between assertive and aggressive which debt collectors often cross.

However, since your FI told them he would pay them after other things, they will not be satisfied and will probably continue to call. I would suggest setting up some sort of payment plan with them. Even if they'll accept as little as $10 a month, it may be what he has to do.

Google "The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act". It's short, clear and easy to understand what they CAN and CAN'T do.

There is a provision in there that you can use that will STOP them COLD. WRITE them a certified letter, return receipt requested, and USE it.

Write the creditor a letter advising them the consistent phone calls are harmful to the well-being of your household and you 'demand that the calls cease and desist immediately".. offer them a means of communcation via mailings to your home address. Send this letter certified mail and regular mail. Keep a copy with your CMRRR receipt attached. If after you have done this and that entity continues to call, tell them verbally that you will be turning the matter over to the Attorney General's Office. Normally, that takes care of it. If it doesn't, report the situation to the AGO's office and they will handle it. Of course, you'll need to provide the AGO a copy of your letter and CMRRR receipt. Good luck!

Buy a zapper or a privacycorp answering machine, it screens your calls for you. If they use an automated phone system, the zapper will send a signal that they have dialed a wrong number. Research these items through Google - I'm buying the privacycorp answering machine so I can program their numbers and when they call it doesn't even ring. Peace and quiet.

We have not heard any info on the debt. If you fiancé owes money he should try to make a payment agreement unless the debt is beyond the statute of limitations.
