Details on S-Trap....
For right now we'll compare the most common traps. The "P" trap,(see image) and the illegal "S" trap(see image). A "S"trap is unvented and a unvented trap can pull the trap seal down, by the suction of the draining water, to the point of allowing sewer gas to enter your home. This is why "S" traps are outlawed in every state in the union and Canada. A "P" trap will break this suction by allowing the trap to breath through a vent to the outside air. Hope this answers your question. Next question! Tom
