I would like to turn the large loft aria above a garage into living space which is a joined to the master bedroom so when the loft is finished I will be entering the loft from the bedroom. The house is 14 yrs old with an aluminum roof which is fastened to 3x2inch battens the aluminum roof is visible between the 7x2 inch rafters there are no walls in the loft the roof is A-frame style. What is the procedure to insulate this type off roof and what R value of insulation would I need we live in Ottawa Canada needless to say it gets cold in winter .

I would use at least (6"Foil or paper back fiberglass) insulation, and staple it up to the rafters real good with a construction type staple gun. if you leave it exposed, use chicken fence wire to hold it up anmd not let it sag down in the center betweenthe rafters. or 4'x8' paneling or sheetrock (1/2 ") I would also use the same insulation on the outside end wall.
