Hi,

I work in MA right now as a contractor, share an apt with others during weekdays and go back to NJ during weekend. I do not want to change my permanent address to MA because of immigration issue. My company ask me about the state tax withholding. I decide to pay tax to both NJ and MA this year and get tax return at the end of the year. My question is: when filling in the MA tax withholding form, which address I should use? The NJ one or the MA one?

Thanks a lot.

You need to file BOTH returns.

You will pay taxes for the money you earned in MA to MA.

NJ will give you a credit for that tax paid. It is possible that the credit will completely offset any taxes owed to NJ. You will STILL have to file a NJ return, but no taxes may be due.
