My fuel gauge will not read; the needle is actually negative below the "E" mark all the time. It does not work at all, Not with the tank full or empty. I am forced to rely on the warning light on the dash, which does work at present to know when I am out of fuel. This is a high mileage truck 220,000 miles. But I love it and wish to keep it for winter and work etc. because of the 4WD.


Please help me figure out how to troubleshoot this problem. I am fairly mechanical and know
That the sending unit in the gas tank could be bad, however I do not wish to remove the gas tank which is a major ordeal and replace the sender until I have exhausted all other possibilities. (i.e. a poor electrical connection or a bad ground.) Thus I prefer to systematically trouble shoot the problem through the process of elimination. Thank you in advance. If there is access to a specific detailed electrical diagram of the circuit I would really appreciate your helping me to acquire it. :)

You said the light works... I would think the problem isn't in the tank, but rather in the gauge itself. Short of removing the cluster/guage, the diag will be tough.

Check for continuity in wire between fuel tank sending unit and gauge.
With ignition switch in On position, check for battery voltage across B+ pin and ground pin.
