A friend of mine in high school did something similar to this (heck it might even be the same thing). During the summer she would travel to country with a group of other students and would live in that country for the whole summer. She went to Russia one summer and Australia the next. I remember thinking it was really cool. She always had a lot of fun and they got to do some fun stuff and they learned a lot about the countries they lived in.

It is a great opportunity. Anytime you get to see the world is a great opportunity. You meet the most interesting people and get to see the coolest stuff. Once people hear you are American they get pretty excited. If it's a country where they don't speak English they love it because they get to practice their English on you. I've never run across an unfriendly person in another country.
If you want to hear about someone fearless - a guy I used to work with quit his very high paying job to go backpack around the world for 2 years! He had the coolest experiences and met the most interesting people and pretty much had a journey that he will be able to talk about for years.

He has really cool pictures and everything.
You shouldn't let a fear of planes stop you from a cool adventure. The discomfort of a few hours on a plane is worth the adventure. Plus from what I remember from my friend who did this same program they would all fly on the plane together. So it was like a big flying party. With everyone chatting and having a good time.

Glad to help. You should never let the fear of the unknown stop you from an adventure. I live by the following Zen saying "Leap and the net will appear". Meaning if you put effort into taking a chance something will put the effort into you succeeding.

If it is a reputable agency it can be a great experience. I know several kids who have done this. I have been on the receiving end of it. Over the years my family has hosted 5 students that stayed the year.

I can't imagine Homegirl is one! :)
They typically screen the families. When I was growing up my brother played soccer and we would host kids from Canada every summer. It was fun. I remember two of the kids we hosted were amazed by our garage. They had never seen the automatic garage door. It was hilarious. They would make us sit in the car and make the garage door go up and down a bunch of times.

They do pretty extensive checks and interviews on host families. They interview all of the members of your family, do background checks.

Our last student was from Russia. The size of grocery stores always amazed her. She went with me one day and took pictures of the produce and meat departments. She could not believe all the choices we had for things to buy. She was a real joy to have in our home that year. She has been back here a couple of times since then.

It might be for real but it might be something that gets sent out to all students who at a certain grade level. Its probably like the "Who's Who in American High School Students" it's a legit thing but it goes out to lots of students.

What got to me is though, I go to school in Staten Island and she goes to school in NYC, I don't know many people who got it but you nevr know, now days people will do anything for a few thousand dollars.
Haha that's good though, if its reall we all go together.
President Bush's name was on it so that one great reason not to trust it.

Sep 25, 2007, 06:03 PM
Oh it would be fun.
My best friend lived in Mexico for 3 weeks with a host family. They loved her. She said they were so welcoming and loving and they treated her like a member of the family within the first minute - though I believe that's more of a cultural thing. Still she loved it and they were the sweetest people. She had been worried she would be a terrible guest but they were so welcoming it was impossible to be a bad guest.

Yeah but it would be an amazing opportunity for you to grow as a person. I bet your parents wouldn't want you to miss out on something like this on account of them not coming. Maybe they could arrange to come and meet you in one place and spend some time there too.

HI,
We housed a foreign exchange student for a year(from Germany)and she came back for 3 more years(during the summer months) to go on our family vacations,1 year with her cousin in tow... lol, since then 1 sister relocated to Germany to work in the (former)DDR and stayed with her family.
This sounds like the ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME!!
Just think how many people would love to be able to do this?
Think hard about this,it could be one of the most rewarding things you could ever do in your life!
Good luck,
Ken
