From the fan there is a brown wire by its self and a bundle with red, yel, gray, pink. I'm assuming this bundle is for the fan. Where does the fan out wire from the receiver attach? Is the brown on the fan just the old antenna? Thanks... J

From the ceiling wires Black? And white(hot and neutral) go to receiver in, fan out goes to fan wire, red would go to light kit/wire, and the common out would connect to light/fan neutral(white). If the brown wire exits unit by itself, likely an antenna.

It sounds like you don't have the right receiver. Is this a replacement receiver?

There is only one fan out wire on the receiver and 4 on the fan itself Gry,pink, red, yel. Fan mod# is 23457 the new receiver is 84368 both are Hunter. The 12 year old at Lowe's said this replaces all hunter receivers and mine was no longer available. Should I tie all but the gray together and land it on the fan out wire ?

I need to get some terms straight with you, it's my problem not yours. Also, I need to get the installation site straight in my block head.

If I understood you correctly, you have an existing fan (12 years old) that you want to put a remote control unit on. Also, The fan cannot supply power to anything else. Power is brought to it and passes through it's innards and then back to the panel.


When I see a wire described as "Fan Out", it means that it is the first wire in a harness of wires going from the fan in port to the "Fan Out" loads or contact points. I don't think that is what you mean.

What I am looking for is the wire that goes from the junction box in the ceiling back to the breaker panel. It should be a 12/2 or 12/3 depending on whether you are controlling the fan from one or two wall switches. There should also be a 12/2 pairing that goes from the black of the source to the switch in the wall. Black will take power to the switch, white will bring power back to the fan and the light package. There should be a small amount of black tape on each end of the white wire from the switch this white wire is now a load carrying wire. IT IS NOT A NEATURAL wire. It connects to the black and possibly blue or (Stripped black/white lead at the fan). That's the basic fan wiring.

I dearly need help understanding the remote unit you have, so I'll take a trip to hunter fan and see if I can find it.

If this is a additive part that is supposed to be backward compatible with all of their other fans, then there must be documentation as such. Also there should be a diagram on how to marry the two. Do you have that? Where is this remote supposed to physically fit, in the fan housing, on the wall, in the light housing?

If I am making this more difficult than it has to be, I apologize but I'm really having troubles getting my arms (no mention of brain) around what I'm trying to visualize.

The person at Lowe's was wrong. Return this receiver, call Hunter, get the correct receiver. Problem solved.

Apparently I've upset you. Did you read my last post where I'm telling you that I don't understand the terms you are using and I wanted to get them straight before I stepped further off the cliff. Also given your posts just exactly how am I supposed to glean what I need if you don't help.

New to the forum, and I hate to rehash this one. But I have this same receiver and remote. Apparently there is a problem with my remote part number 85095-01 and I have changed the batteries and the remote light stays on all the time- until the battery dies. So I have been forced as well to go to hunter and buy the replacement remote and receiver.

This ceiling fan is only two years old. For whatever reason this thing has crapped out. So I have this new receiver I want to install (Part number 84368-060) and I would like to put it to use on this fan. However there is a white plastic wire block that consist of a bunch of wires of various colors ( pink, gray, white, brown, yellow, red and black) and all wires are pinned inside of this plastic block in an assigned slot. The block is marked with an L which has no wire, and a were there is a brown wire pinned to it. The other side of the plastic block goes to the receiver is mounted inside the light kit and can be separated from the other block which comes from the fan which is mounted above.

I need to find out how to sort through this mess and properly install this new receiver. Any kind of help would be really appreciated. Thank you.

One of your buttons on your remote is stuck. Very easy fix.

I have the remote apart to include the key pad and install the battery and the light still stays on, I think the remote is bad. I will take it to my avionics shop at work and see if they can troubleshoot. But I would still like to be able to use this fan. I paid a lot for it and would like to see it work. And because the remote takes a dump I think Hunter fans should be fixing the problem. I have contacted them again. I would think they would give a schematic or something to that nature on how to wire to this new receiver rendering the fan useful again. I will keep you in mind if I do scrap the fan. Mind you the shipping for the fan. I will see if anyone has a post that will help with the wiring aspect of this receiver. Thank you for your advise ceilingfanrepair.

The two receivers are not compatible unless you ordered the one from Hunter.

Just order a new remote from Hunter.

I have the Hunter Grand Lodge fan which I purchased decemeber, 2004. Remote stopped working... It would operate the fan, but not the light. I just got off the phone with Hunter Fan Customer Service. They are sending me a replacement remote receiver, Part # 85112-04 as a courtesy even though this is not in warranty. They said I would receive it in 7 days. Very coureous rep... I was impressed.

I have the same problem as described. Two years ago I purchased two hunter fans, same model (can't remember model name). Out of the box, one of the remote LED lights stayed lit, so I returned it to (either Lowe's or Home Depot?) and has worked until about a month ago. Now the same problem has happened. It is not a stuck button as a previous comment has suggested. I know this because I disassembled the unit until I just had a circuit board in my hand. When I inserted the battery the LED light still remains lit. It appears to be an ongoing problem based on what I have read here. Since I already have a wall switch wired for fan/light control, I think I will get rid of the remote altogether and save myself the aggravation. Unless anyone has any other advice regarding this situation.

If the fans have pullchains you can bypass the remotes.

I was given the same deal at Lowe's. Some kid told me it would work. I ohmed out the motor which has two windings (pink to yellow and red to grey). I paralelled the two windings with the new receiver output and neutral. The fan doesn't run as fast as it did before. The winding ohmed 30 and 51 ohms. I didn't see any winding damage when I disassembled it. My question, is it OK to run it like this?

Do you have an ampmeter? If it draws less amps than it should and runs slower it is safe. If it draws more amps than it should and runs slower it is not.

Regardless it is better to get the correct replacement parts.

I have a Hunter model # 23457 and the remote will no longer reverse the fan or dim the light. All other functions work properly. When trying to reverse I hear a click and the fan slows briefly but then continues in the same direction. Hunter claims that the receiver, part# 8511202 is bad and they want $50 plus shipping just for this part which seems excessive. They tell me that remotes and receivers sold at Home Depot will not work with this fan. All I want to do is run it in the summer mode. Do you have any suggestions.
