Hi my name is Gavin Bethell.

I am from England and have lived in Delaware for past 7 years.

I know I can not be a police officer until I am a citizen, but I applied to be a probation / parole officer and was accepted to take the test.

If anyone knows if I am eligible or not please let me know, don't want to get my hopes up if its going to be shot down because of immigration once again.

Gavin.

Shouldn't you have discussed your situation at the time you applied to take the test ?

I did discus it, but if you know anything about immigration , not all employers understand the inns and outs of immigration policies, and requirements.

I didn't post the question to have you tell me what I should have done, I posted it to see if anyone has experience in the field and knows the Answer.

Thanks for nuthin.

I asked a pertinent question, I am sorry you took it the way you did, but seeing as they are a government body and you had a legit question then I would think that they could determine first if it was to everyone's best interest for you to take the test. As a matter of fact, it would only take a few minutes for you to call the immigration department to find the answer yourself.

I explore all possibilities before giving up on something I want to find out.

Upon applying for the job, it did not say anything about immigration status on the job posting. Then I received a reply letter stating that I meet the requirements.
Then I was asked to take the state test. I asked the department of corrections H.R person and she said I can be a Probation Officer or a Corrections Officer, but I know I can not be a Correctional Officer. Then I spoke to the state of Delaware Human resources and asked them and they know nothing.

So I spoke to D.O.C and the State people and they both said yes I can, but I know that with Correctional state and federal jobs they are held for people of Citizenship. Yet people are telling me I can, and just want to know for sure .

Oh well ama take the test and just hope for the best I guess.

I guess, mysonismylife, you have done just about everything you could, including coming here but don't give up hope. I guess, as you say, you could take the test, cross fingers and everything else and go for it, Good luck and I hope you get the job!!

Thanks , but took your advise and called the state H.R department and insisted they speak to someone who knows the answer.

They found out that any job in the U.S that involves carrying a State issued fire arm, are held for persons of Citizenship regardless of education and experience that of a Permanent Resident, so we both have the answer for future reference.

Thanks.
