My gum is so sore. To the back left of my lower jaw there is a lump behind my tooth and it is so sore. I can't talk and it kills me to swallow. What can I do to numb it so that I can sleep until the dentist appointment??

There isn't that much that you can do to numb it without some kind of topical anaesthetic. My suggestion would be to take something for the pain, like ibuprofen or codiene that combines a sedative (taking into account your medical history, of course... no allergies to afforementioned drugs, etc) The pain you describe may the eruption of your wisdom tooth, or a periodontal (severe gum) infection. Either way, get to your dentist, pronto.

You may also sleep on 2 pillows to even out the blood pressure in you head, that will elevate the blood pressure to the sorness area and stop any pounding you may have or sleep in a lazy boy chair on an incline. Do take some medication until you can go to a dentist

I agree with Renee. If it's a wisdom tooth starting to erupt you could rinse with warm salt water. Take some Tylenol or Ibuprofen for the pain and get to the dentist ASAP. If you have an infection (abscess or gum) you may need an antibiotic before the dentist can do much to help the situation.

There is a topical medication that works for an hour or so, at least enough time to fall asleep. It is called Ambesol and can be purchased at the drug store.
