Hi , I need to ask a question on the subject of animals? My one year old dog has swallowed a Huggies baby wipe? Any one with experience on dog's swallowing non food items?

My lab has done that. He usually throws it up

It is quite common for dogs to swallow all sorts of things. Usually the worst thing is that they throw up. However, it can lead to serious problems such as intestinal blockage. That could be even more dangerous if the soap or whatever on the wipe has a laxative effect. Depending on what shape the dog is in in the morning, at least call the vet.

If you are new to dog owning and have a puppy, you should read through the sticky starting at https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/dogs/information-articles-our-dogs-expert-labman-53153.html#post251802

I have asked to have your question moved to the Dog forum.

You may want to talk to a vet just in case to be safe.

If it is not a caustic chemical then give a tablespoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide... and stand back. He will vomit quickly and empty the contents of his stomach, if not all of it came up give one more. My dog ate ant traps and the vet recommended this. DO NOT use the peroxide used for hair coloring! It is toxic.

Most vets will tell you not to induce vomiting unless they have directed you to do so. I would wait & watch to see if he is eating/drinking normally, pooping normally, and isn't lethargic. Check the package of baby wipes. I don't remember if Huggies is biodegradable. Most of the wipes are. If they are, it should just pass through his system with no ill effects. There are many more things that are considerably more dangerous to a dogs system. If his eating/drinking/pooping habits have changed at all, give your vet a call.

RubyPitbull is absolutely right about not inducing vomiting. When it comes to dogs, many people know just enough to be dangerous.

Tuscany once ate a bit of a huggies wipe. It took him awhile but eventually he did vomit it up. It was actually quite painful for him. Please be sure to monitor him closely.

I am very concerned about the larger mass of a whole one. It could get balled up in the stomach and block the airway as it came back up. Or block the intestine. Since th ewipes have wet strength, I am not sure how quickly they would break up in the digestive system. They might even swell.

I don't think they swell up but I definitely understand the concern if he vomits it up and if it stayed in one piece, that it could block the airway. Since LADY hasn't told us the breed of dog, I found this a hard call. If it is a large dog, one baby wipe that hasn't been chewed up, might go through the system without incident. I definitely think on a small dog like Tuscany the concern for his health would be very great.

I didn't want to state this publicly but I guess I am going to have to. Ahem, when my dog was still a puppy, she managed to get into my waste basket in my bathroom and ate a femine hygiene product. Those are much bulkier than a wipe and do swell up. I called the vet in a panic. I was told to wait & watch. She ate, drank water, appeard her normal self. A day later, she pooped it out (whole) with no lingering effects. So, this is why I didn't suggest she take the dog into the vet immediately but wait & see how the dog is acting, if he eats, poops, drinks water and acts normally. Since the original post was made last night, I am wondering what LADY decided to do as of this morning before I even posted.

LADY, if you get these posts, will you please update us as to the status of your dog. We are all very concerned.

We once had a Lab, and when he was a pup he ate anything he could get, He ate a box of crayons once, when picking up the poo I then realized where the crayons disappeared to,
It was a colorful array! LOl!
Usually if they can pass it it will be OK, but once he got a bone stuk and had to have it surgically removed. If you have a dog like this that will devoure, Watch out with some of those bones or they swallow them hole!

I called the vet immediately when tuscany ate the wipe (about 1/4 of one before I could get to him). They said the same thing that Ruby said... wait and see. He vomitted the whole thing in one piece later in the evening. Like I said it was painful, but nothing blocked his breathing. The biggest most immediate concern voiced by my vet was over the possibility of choking.

Once when I was sitting a friend's dog, she warned me he had eaten her grandsons crayons.

Ok guys!Got it... Thanks for the replies.. He did, however, leave the huggie in the yard! He is doing great. No ill effects. We let nature take its course.. The whole huggie came out. My daughter inlaw research Huggies and thankfully they are biodegradable, flushable, non toxic.. So my crazy, jealous? Pup is doing wonderful. I will try and put his photo on here for all to see. I was worried sick. He has been my savior since my older one passed on..
You guys really are wonderful and caring. Thanks again.

When we were raising our first dog guide puppy, my son was still at home and had a paper route. While he was rolling papers in the morning, she always managed to scarf down a few rubber bands. I kept telling him if he wasn't more careful, I was going pick up some out of the yard and put them in his supply.

LADY, he is a very cute pup. Glad he is okay. As much as we try to puppyproof everything and be vigilant, every once in a while, we can get distracted and forget to put things back out of reach. With a baby around, it can be even more of a challenge for our brains. ;)

Rufus is doing wonderful. He is one curious, frisky pup. I know he is part silver sheppard, but the other half is either whippet or ciao(italian greyhound).. thank you all for the advise and concern. Hope all yours is doing OK... Yes he also ate a few panty liners.. well they come out too. But I guess one can't be to careful. Don't you just love them!
