Gene, unfortunately they are attracted to the sugar. It really can put a damper on things when you are trying to enjoy yourself watching the hummingbirds or just sitting outside. There are products on the market that are made specifically for attracting and trapping bees. You can find them at any large garden center in your area like Home Depot, Loews, Walmart, independent. Or, you can make your own. This link tells you how to do it. Homemade bee traps - foofna - Hummingbird Garden Forum - GardenWeb (http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/hummingbird/msg0905060132669.html)
Place them in areas away from the feeder and where you sit. If you make a few, you can spread them out in a small section. That should pull them completely away from your feeder. Good luck! :)
