Hi everyone, I've not posted any questions for a while, however I have been logging in evry day and most of the times there are alredy questions asked which answer my questions, however I have a question which I would be grateful to having answers to:

I am a mum of 1 (3 and 1/2 yr old) I am trying to get pregnant since May 2007, I have very regular periods each month. I have a very good inkling that I might be pregnant, I've not had a period yet not due for another week, but I'm experiencing cramps around my lower abdomen, very full breasts, slight headaches and just feel like eating all the time, it could just be my imagination,
That was just a brief history of my story,
Now my question is the holy moth of ramadan starts on 12th September 2007 and being a muslim it is compulsory for me to keep these fasts, (which start at sunrise till sunset without eating or drinking)unless I'm on my periods, taking strict medication or very heavily pregnant (8/9 month)
Do you think it is wise keepin fasts so early on in pregnancy:confused:

Sorry for the looong story, all answers welcome :)

I don't think you should fast during any part of your pregnancy. You might be able to handle fasting on your own, but you have to think about the fact that you are eating for two. Also, the lack of nutrients can be harmful to you and your baby especially if you are taking prenatal vitamins and such. I am not muslim but I would think twice before fasting while your pregnant!

I wouldn't want to fast while pregnant, but if it is just for that one day I'm sure you would be okay. Consult your doctor on this matter.

I wouldn't fast, but since I don't hold that religious conviction its unfair for me to weigh on the importance you must feel to abide by it.

However, I would highly recommend talking with your doctor. He/she will be able to give you better guidelines and inform you as to what specifically you should do determinate on your body and physcial condition.

Assalaam alaikum sister,

As a muslim myself,
I would advise you to get a doctors opinion, if the doctor says that you are not strong enough to fast then take his advise and make up the Ramadan fasts later before the next Ramadan.

Do bear in mind that Allah burdens not a person more than he/she can bear. And Islam always gives options for those who are too ill to fast or pregnant mothers who may not be up to fasting.

TurnToIslam.Com Turn To Islam islamic videos (http://www.turntoislam.com)
Check out this site and ask the muslim sisters there for a confirmation of what I said.

I was very nauseaus/throwing up almost everyday during my first trimester of pregnancy and it was during Ramadan,Doctors advise was to not fast.
I did not fast most days, but did fast on the days I felt good.

Alhamdlillah, I had a healthy baby girl.:)

Wa salaam

I would not personally, but I am not muslim either, and therefore it is difficult for me to weigh. I also suggest talking to your doctor. I know that in many faiths though, pregnancy is a welcome exception to fasts and other similar rituals... good luck.

You've had good advice given to you.

My partner and I are Christian, and have chosen in years past to fast during the Lenten season from sunup to sundown... it is not mandated, but its common for Christians to give something up during this religious season, and its been a good exercise for us.

When she was pregnant with our son, and still nursing him the following year, she chose instead to eat healthy, but with considered moderation... meaning she didn't eat treats, candies, junk food, and she ate reasonable portions... which is healthy anyway. Also, we ate modestly. No grand meals w filet mignon. Again, she ate healthy, but with less embellishments, more humbly.

In addition to eating in moderation and omitting "junk" she added in extra time at the beginning and the end of the day to meditate, be in prayer, etc... so she "sacrificed" more of her personal time to make up for the normal "sacrifice" she would have normally observed.

It is good to get the benefit of religious activities.

As for the muslim fast, the fast is from dawn till dusk and we refrain from eating, drinking and sexual activities the whole day, but we can eat and drink among other things during the night until dawn.

And prayers are observed everyday 5 times a day in every month of every year.
And the thing is that we are rewarded more for good deeds on selected months than others and the month of Ramadan is one of the most blessed months for a muslim.:)

I think your idea is good...
And it is recommended practice for all muslims to feed the needy especially during the month of Ramadan, and to increase religious activities like reciting the whole Quran, doing non-obligatory prayers etc.

Hey everyone thank you for your answers, but it luks like I will be keeping all my fasts regardless, as I started my period yesterday :( . It's a shame because I really really wanted and thought I was pregnant, but then again Ramadan falls once ayear and I would have felt really bad not keeping the fasts, so we'l just try again after ramadan.

Assalaam alaikum sister,

Why not try during Ramadan nights and say before you begin"Bismillah.Allaahumma jannib-nash shaitaana,wa jannibish-shaitaana maa razaqtanaa"-In the name of Allah.Oh Allah keep the devil away from us and keep the devil away from that which you provide us.
Insha Allah, Allah will bless you in ways you never thought...

Assalaam alaikum sister,

It is part of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad(peace be upon him), he advised that we read that dua before intercourse each time as a protection from the shaytaan.

Hadith number Al-Bukhari 6/41,Muslim 2/1028.
I took the dua from the "Fortress of the Muslim,Invocations from the Quran and Sunnah."

Hi there
I am a muslim and would like to say I am 8mths pregnant and am still going to fast as many as I can. Allah will reward you and hopefully make this dream of yours come true. But like you said your not sure if you are yet pregnant why miss the fasting. Its up to you but if you do something with your true heart allah will reward you. Many people have misscarriages I have had 1 as well. It happens it means its not your time yet if you want advice on how to get pregnet please do feel free to email me on EMAIL REMOVED I had the same problem first. But I used this formular which I was told by the nurse and it worked both times for me. May allah be with you sister. Please ask a doctor if you think you need medical advice.

When fasting during pregnancy you must consider the life of the unborn child within. This child does not have an option to eat or not, and completely relies upon the mother for nutrition during the prenatal period.

The health and wellbeing of the fetus depends solely on what the mother does and does not eat. The life of the fetus is in your hands.

I do not recommend fasting as that baby is starving during a fast. You are robbing it of the nutrition is necessary for development of the fetus, to insure a healthy happy baby.

I agree with you J9 that if there is a possibility of the baby or the mother's health being in jeopardy during fasting then it is allowed in Islam to leave off fasts and make it up later.Islam even reccommends breast feeding mothers to not fast during that period.

But on a personal note, I would like to say that I know many who have fasted during their pregnancies and have had healthy babies.
And the fast is only from dawn till dusk, we break the fast at sunset and during the night we can eat.
It is also recommended practice to eat as late as possible nearer to the morning prayers which would be an hour or so before sunrise.

Assalaam alaikum rubz,
Insha Allah, I will be beginning our fasts day after tomorrow.
May you have a blessed Ramazan sister!

to sum extent what J9 is saying is tru to the fact that the fetus completely relires on the mother for nutrients and so on, but as Firmbeliever said there is no way we would put mothers/babys life in jeapordy and risk the health of either by fasting if we were not up to doing so (hope that makes sense).

And Firmbeliever inshallah we start fasting 2mrw, thurs 13th, I pray you have a very blessed month of ramadan and stay in good health through this month. I like every year will inshallah keep all my fasts, pregnant or not, however we will still try through this month aswel

I will also note that while this is called a fast, it is only during certain hours of the day and a person does eat every day, only not during daylight hours. So a person can still get a lot of all the needed foods during the meals they do eat.

But I would not recommend any change of diet without consulting your doctor.
