I live in New Mexico and I am wanting to add a natural gas fire pit to my back yard.

How deep to I need to bury a gas line?

Can I use galvanized pipe?

Do I need to wrap the pipe with anything?

Is there anything else I should be aware of in tackling this project?

When I had the house I built I made sure a gas line was available for this project.

If metallic, a minimum of 12" of cover (two feet is optimum, though).

If plastic, a minimum of 18" of cover.


Can I use galvanized pipe?

You can, but I wouldn't recommend you do so.

Black iron pipe is less susceptible to damage from moisture that is common in a lot of natural gas supplies.


Do I need to wrap the pipe with anything?

The piping does need to be wrapped -- Most municipalities stipulate machine wrapped black iron piping -- You should check with your local authority before deciding on the best material to use.

And you may check to see if your code requires pressure testing, all new lines in my area have to be pressure tested prior to use. And inspected prior to usage also by the gas company ( but that may just be our area)
