I had to replace the washers in a 3 knob shower fixture. Now I can't seem to get the diveerter stem instaled properly. Help, please.

The diverter stem and washer assembly, (see image) should install the same as the other stems. What's your problem with the installation? Regards, Tom

My problem is that I can't seem to set the diverter back into the fixture so that is sends water to the tub and upon clockwise rotation it sends water to the shower head.

What I get is water in both directions. Almost as if I am bridging both water outlets and blocking none.

Yesterday, I tried to loosen the packing nut and could not get it undone. Is the nut a CCW loosen or a CC loosen?

Regardless, when I could not get the nut out, I turned the supply "H" back on and moved the diverter from tub to shower. Water ran out of both the showerhead and tub spigot. No water appeared along the diverter stem arm or from around the packing nut.

I'm open for any suggestions. Does the diverter have to be biased in any direction prior to final instalation or does it just screw back into the valve without adjustment?

Hey Don,
The bonnet packing nut unscrews counter clockwise. This is a brass to brass connection so there's no worry about it rusting in. The diverter stem,(see image) has a seat that it seats into. It should just screw in. If the seat's nicked of has rough spots it would give you the situation you describe. Good luck, Tom

In order to get at the valve, do I loosen and remove the outside housing or do I remove the packing nut and remove the stem?

To inspect the seat the diverter stem must be removed. What "outside housing " do you refer to? Regards, Tom

The packing nut fits into a housing (Brass). The nut is tightened against this housing. The housing also has a nut on it and if I loosen that, the whole unit comes loose and with just the right amount of finesse, I can get from behind the tile on the bathroom shower wall.
