Our washing machine has been giving small shocks while it is in operation. The shocks occur when you make contact with the water in the tub, or with the lid. This only happens when the machine is actually operating. I checked the receptacle that it is plugged into, and it checks out as being properly grounded. Nothing else is currently plugged into this receptacle. What else should I check, so that I can get rid of this shock hazard?

You got some wires that have chaffed and shorted, or possibly lost a gound connection. This should be dealt with, by a professional, soon. The chaffing may be internal and not easily found.

Are you referring to wires in the machine, or in my houses electrical?

It could be both. The condition of the housing wiring may not be as suspect, unless there are other appliances having similar problems. My suggestioin would be to have a qualified and/or certified appliance technician check both.

You can purchase your own three prong receptacle tester. Radio Shack or similar for around $8 to $10 plus or minus.
