View Full Version : Do Oil Based Stains Void Fire Rating on Cedar Shingles

Need Help on Remodel

This is my first post on this Board - I appreciate any insight that people might have. We are in the middle of a large remodel and plan to use cedar shingles to side the house. The city that we live in has very strict building codes and we understand that shingles must be fire rated to pass final inspection and they have recently taken the position that oil based stains void the fire rating.

We want to use a cabot clear solution stain on the shingles - it comes in oil and water based formulations. Any ideas about how we can retain the warranty and fire rating on the shingles after dipping them in a cabot stain?

Not sure, contact your insurance agent. They will be glad to let you know if your current policy will be voided or if they would cover your losses in the event of a loss.

Hmm, as far as the warranty, contact the shingles manufacturer.
