As of right now our washing machine is in a cramped room up on the second floor and we want to relocate it down to our attached garage. I've heard that it isn't such a great idea due to cold temperature and freezing but I live in NYC and the temperature inside my garage is definitely above freezing. However, I have a question about where to drain the water. I'm no plumbing expert so please bear with me. There is a pit in my garage floor where there are a few pipes running. One of those pipes has an opening that a plumber once used to clear a clog. I was wondering if it would be possible to feed the water into there? I'm afraid that the water would backup or there would be some sewage gases or some other problem to worry about. If this solution is not possible, does anyone else have another way to drain the water? Thanks.

If You Can Located The Washer Machine Close To The Wall And Have A "trap" Installed Just Above The Other Pipe That Is In The Drain, Then Run Up The Wall At Least 36" And Hook The Drain Pipe From Washer Machine In At This Height You Should Be O.k. And The Trap Will Stop The Sewer Gas Smell Due To The Water Trapped Inside Of The Trap.

Okay, thanks Mowerman2468 for the advice; I will do that. But I just realized another problem. Right now the pipe that I would connect to has a cover on it and if I were to drain into there using a trap or a pipe, I would have to remove the cover. I would probably use 2" PVC pipe to do this job but the opening is about 3" - 4". Any clever ideas to cover this gap? (The trap would be pretty useless if there's an opening where it empties into the drain hahah)

I would also consider some heat tape in the winter months. It does get cold in NYC, even freezes at times.

If this pit is out of the way then you can add a fitting where the cover is, leave one opening for the clean out and the other going to the washing machine. I am assuming that the cover fits into the clean out by threads, so you might have trouble finding a fitting that will screw into the threads that are there. You might have to use some ingenuity to make a sealed connection at that point.
