What are your thoughts on placing supply and drains in an exterior wall. (knee wall in converted attic). I really don't have an alternative. The pipes being in the knee wall, I could always double up the wall and insulate the heck out of it. I am in Wisconsin and it gets a little nippy sometimes. Someone recommended a vent into the wall from inside the room, so that the conditioned (heated air) can have better access to the pipes?. :confused: I'd appreciate your input and any codes or standard pratices you can offer.

Tom may not fight too many frozen pipes in Florida. I don't know why they seem to go out of their way to run pipes up outside walls. I do know they do it in Canada too. The drain shouldn't be a problem. Water never stands in it. As for the supply, make sure it runs inside the insulation and the insulation is in good shape. Maybe even add a foam sleeve over the pipe. The drywall should allow enough heat out to keep the water flowing.

Hi Louie, Welcome back and greetings from a Beloit, Wisconsin transplant.
The one thing I never missed was Wisconsin winters. If you're worried about the supplies freezing you could always run them up the inside wall and paint or cover them. I've seen plenty of below zero weather in Beloit. However heat raises and you might have enough ambient heat in the walls to prevent the pipes from freezing. As Lab suggested, use Armoflex if you install them in the outside wall. Good luck, Tom
