Hi,
My window air conditioner (5,000 BTUs) fan is not blowing out air. When I turn it on, it makes a sound but no air comes out. Can I just fix it myself and can anyone help? We've had 80% humidity days and I need to dry out my house.
It was working for a short time then it just stopped blowing air. I have a second one downstairs that I bought at the same time two years ago (no more warranty) and it works just fine. I'm dying at night as everything feels wet and sticky! I won't even mention how hot.
Thanks!
Max

Is the motor humming or making no noise at all. Could be the fan motor is bGood Kuckad, the capacitor is bad or the switch is bad. Do you have a multimeter to start checking componets? If you cannot repair yourself you are better off replacing unit. Once they go out for waranty they are too expensive to repair by a tech. Post back if you have meter and need help as what and how to test. You will have to remove unit from its cabinet. Many timesI have found a broken or corroted wire.

Thanks for answering so quickly. There is a humming as if it wants to start. I have no idea about how to do the meter stuff you advised about. I can take apart the unit to see though. Maybe it is a wire and I'll get lucky. I'll do it now and let you know. Also, I should say when I put it on the fan option, nothing happens. When I put it on air condition option, it just hums as if it's working but no air is coming out like nothing is being pushed out. Any ideas based upon that info?
Thanks,
Max

If the motor is trying to start, when you get it out of cabinet. Plug it back it and spin the fan with your hand or screwdriver(be careful) If it continues to run all you have bad is the capacitor. It will be round. Replace it with one of like value (will be stamped on it) Not expensive. Many times you can look at the top and it will be bulged out. This does not always tell you but many times it does. It should be flat on top. Good Luck and post back for more help and with you results. It may help others in the future.
