When pricing painting jobs by the square foot. What is the proper way to measure? For both interior and exterior. I starting my own business and would like to price by the square foot method. Thank you for any help and ideas.

As far as measuring, you measure the base line, then you measure up one of the side lines. Multiply the two numbers together, and that gives you the square feet. For instance: let's say that the ground or floor line of a wall is 10 feet in length and the length of one of the sides, going up and down, is also 10 feet. You would multiply those numbers together, and the total would then be 100 square feet.

Other factors to consider would be the type of surface that is to be painted, i.e. textured, porosity, unevenness, etc.

I am glad that you are wanting to price by the square foot, as that is the most honest and qualifying way to show a customer why you are charging what you are charging them.
