I have a Carrier Weather Maker 8000 Gas Furnace with a Carrier Air conditioner unit connected. Every year about this time, my AC stop working. All the pipes that connect the AC are frozen and the Carrier AC unit fan works but have frozen ice all in the unit which is in my backyard. When I remove the ice from the pipes, it takes less than three minutes before you can see the frost and ice forming on the pipes. This happens every year. Is there something that I can do to get my AC working again? I know I can call an AC tech but I am trying to troubleshoot this issue first before I make that call.

What was the fix for this same issue in the past? Probably the same problem. Do you call a tech to have refergiant added when this happens? Have you a clean filter installed. These issues could be by lack of air flow such as dirty coils dirty air filter. Slow moving fan lack of refrigerant ( caused by a leak) of a restriction. To keep unit running in top notch performance you really should have serviced annually by a qulified tech. Good Luck

Every year I had an annual maintenance on my Carrier Weather Maker 8000 Gas Furnace and each year the same tech would turn on the heater for about 15 minutes to melt the ice that formed in a closure above the furnace. He would also check for leaks and replace the air filter and put Freon in the AC unit if it was low. After that my AC would work great until next year. He did mention one time that he would come out during the annual check and remove the furnace from it location and clean every part on the unit but that never happened. Can you help?

Probaby on the inside unit he is referring to taking the evaporator out and cleaning it. A good idea. Strange it happens at same time each year. Hopefully, you do change air filer throughout the year. If you have pets inside they deed to be changed often. Pet hair does collect on filter quickley. Open inside unit up and see if you have ice on coils or are the completely frosted up.

Talked to a Carrier Tech and he said I have five possibilities.

1. It might be low on Freon.

2. Since I own five four legged creatures, they will always contribute to the two V shape filters being clogged up with pet hairs. Both filters are located in a metal box above the gas burner. He said that probably why my pipes have ice on them.

3. The air conditioning coil probably needs cleaning.

4. He mentioned that the brass tube that is coming out of the box above the furnace is probably clogged up with some small particle that keeps the fluid or air flowing.

5. The furnace blower relay might need to be replaced because the furnace makes a loud humming noise as if it is trying to start the blower and then shut down and is quiet again.

6. He said my heater/ac unit probably needs a good cleaning that usually takes 4 to 6 hours. I agree since this unit has never been cleaned according to specs.

These are all problems that cause your symptoms. You made the right decision on having these things looked at. I'm sure after you have it serviced your issue will be solved. Good Luck

I will let you know next Tuesday what the verdict is all about. I have an appointed for the Carrier tech to do a diagnosis on my system.

Ask your contractor what the difference in price would be to just replace the coil with one with an expansion valve.
If you have a leak in the old coil this would solve that or if your condensate pan is rusted,this would solve any future water leaks, if you were to upgrade in the future you would have the expansion valve already installed.
You would save on labor by not having to wash the old coil and fix any leaks that might exist,
You would already have the coil removed and this is the time to change it.

The Ambient Air Heating & Cooling Company came out yesterday and said I need a new blower motor and a control board. My Freon is at the right level and because of that, there is no need to look at the AC coil. He said if he had to clean the coil, it would cost me $500.00 and that would not be covered by my home warranty. Now my GE fridge is not cooling. No air probably contributes to my fridge going out. They are ordering the parts and hopefully, they will be out today to install them. Yesterday, I had to throw out all my food in my refrigerator. I am not a happy camper on this matter.:mad: :mad:
