Hello
I have a schnawzer with a foxtail in his nose ( I THINK) HE IS SNEEZING AND BREQTHING FUNNY - IT IS 10:30 pm where I live - will he be OK until the morning. He seems uncomfortable - my husband wants to put olive oil in his nose to loosen up the foxtail is this a good idea - I don't think so

I have had a couple of dogs and I would say wait until you can get him to a vet. Foxtails can be very sharp and you don't want to cause anymore damage :)

Fortunately I have been spared personal experience with foxtails. I found this link at Woodhaven Labradors - Michigan - the original Woodhaven Labradors since 1974 (http://www.woodhavenlabs.com), Ecclectica - Foxtail barley: a threat to your dog (http://www.ecclectica.ca/issues/2004/1/smith.asp) I have found Woodhaven much more reliable that the average site Google turns up. Most of the sites a search turns up are better ignored. I may not agree with everything I find at Woodhaven, but over all, it is a great resource.

In reviewing that older thread, my chemical background suggests the vegetable oil, which is more polar than a mineral oil, would be more easily absorbed by cellulose based foxtail. I would only give the vegetable oil time to work until the vet's office opened. If you don't have any olive oil, the common liquid shorting should be about the same.
