My stepson in Florida has been renting a home from his father. Rent was $1200/mo . His father let him slide a number of times on the rent so it has been varied as to what he paid. Now his stepmom informed him 12 days ago the property was sold and he needs to pay the new owners $1200 immediately. He was not given any contact info for the new landlords nor have they contacted him. He was quite surprised at the news of new ownership. He has not the money presently to pay. What are his legal options for staying there until finding a new place? And what are his obligations to paying the specified rent?

Thirty days notice is appropriate, but he think he has legal recourse because he was not informed by letter that the property had been sold. I think she may have jumped the gun not knowing her legal obligations.

First of course could the mother be playing games with him?

Normally a tenant will be informed of the sale, see for sale signs, see people coming in and looking at the home, see someone doing a inspection, see people doing an appraisial.

If there is a new owner, he will either have to pay or move,
