I have a 99 Ford Escort ZX2 and it won't start. After checking all the fuses, fuel pump and battery, it was found that the fuel pump is not getting power. What would cause the fuel pump not to get power? When I turn the key to the "on" position, the fuel pump does not kick on. However, the fuel pump does work. I have replaced the "brain" or the computer, and it still doesn't work. I can get the car to start with starting fluid, but it doesn't stay running.
Please help!!

Replace the fuel pump relay. Disconnect the negative battery cable first. This is what it should look like and cost:

Where is the relay located?

Not sure on Escorts. On other Ford products, Ford locates the Constant Control Relay Modules (CCRM) next to the battery. You may try turning the ignition key on and off and listen for a click.

I have been told that I can bypass this by running power through a toggle switch to the fuel pump. I have tried this, but I end up blowing the fuse. And suggestions?

I would never recommend doing that. If you are in a car crash, the inertia switch won't cutoff fuel to the engine and you could have a giant fireball.

Who determined that the pump isn't getting power? Did they probe the wiring to check for power? It sounds to me like your pump is junk.
