View Full Version : Removing iron from my hair

I recently dyed my hair using a "28 shampoo" semi-permanent dye that was darker than my natural color. I'm blonde, and my hair normally turns orange for a short while when I dye it, but it usually washes out after a few shampoos. Well, I've washed my hair well over the 28 stated times and the color it was supposed to be has washed away, but the bright orange-red has stayed faithfully (and unwelcomingly) with me. I've had people tell me it's because of the iron in our well water, but no one can tell me what to do about it. I really don't want to spend money on some stripping product from a salon, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any home remedies to get iron out of hair. Any answers will be extremely helpful. Thanks!

You said it usually washes out right? Well if you've been using the same water to wash out the previous semi-permanent dye, I don't see why all of the sudden the water would affect it. Did you do anything different this time?

I didn't do anything differently. Our water goes through phases where sometimes the iron is bad, and sometimes there's hardly any there at all. This is one of those times when there is a lot of it in the water, and I don't know what I can do about it.

The iron in water leaves the hair feeling dry, and can affect your hair color. If you have hard water build-up in your hair, use a clarifying shampoo or anti-residue shampoo once a week to remove the build-up.
