Dear Sir,
I have been arrived in Stamford CT, USA from India only few days ago. I am a student and came on J-1 visa for a training program. Please inform me that I have to pay any kind of tax or not. I hope I should be exempted from any kind of tax. I will be very grateful to you for your reply.
Thanking you with regards

Pkumar:
As a general rule, visitors with a J-1 visa are exempt from Social Security and Medicare taxes.
You may have to pay income taxes; it depends on the nature of the work you do. Teachers and researchers are normally exempt from income taxes as well. You said you were under a training program. That does not give me enough information to give you specific guidance.

Dr. Kumar:
Based on what you have told me, it appears that you meet the criteria specified in IRS Pub 519 and therefore are probably exempt from income taxes as well as Social Security and Medicare taxes.
However, while I am knowledgeable of the provisions of the U.S.-India Tax Treay, I am not an expert.
What is your company's (Natural State Research Inc.) position on this issue?
