My 2 1/2 year old whirlpool dryer just started making a humming sound. My husband was trying to dry some old tennis shoes when it kept opening the dryer door. After his third attempt, it started to make this humming sound. It seems to be working. I have not dryed anything because I am not sure if it will damage clothing. I had a company come out to look at it and they told me that I needed to replace the motor since the sound came from the motor area. I thought that was strange. What can I do so I do not have to pay $300 for repair or even buy another dryer.

Quickly starting and stopping a motor is hard on it. It is possible, opening the door damaged the motor. Still, $300 sounds high to replace the motor. Maybe call around and see is somebody quotes a lot less than that for it. Or make your husband replace the motor himself.

Where can I be directed to find intructions on replacing the dryer's motor? My husband is really handy, but he has never worked on a dryer. What's a average price for a motor? And labor?
Thanks!
