NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg was a Democrat. For opportunistic reasons he switched political parties to Republican in 2001 so he could get himself on the ballot for a NY City campaign . He poured enough of his own money into the race that he won the job. He will complete his 2nd term and is looking for greener pastures.
So yesterday he announced he was ending his marriage of convenience with the Republicans and becoming a Democrat again.
Earlier this year there was speculation that he would launch an independent bid for the Presidency (his rumored VP candidate is supposed to be disgruntled Republican Senator Chuck Hagel ) . He repeatedly denies that he is considering a run [wink wink] and I tend to believe him . There is almost no chance that a third party run can produce a win. All he can be is a spoiler and he knows that .Even though he has bragged that he could put a billion dollars of his own money into a campaign ,he is no fool ,and would not invest it if he wasn't sure he could win.
Oh I suppose that he would leave all options open . Heck ;he really doesn't need to make a decision on this until early next year after the two major parties have already decided who their candidates will be. But , there was no reason for him to switch back the Democrats if that is his game plan.
A more likely scenario was forwarded yesterday by Jerry Agar . Making the large assumption that Evita Clinton will win the Presidency ; she would have to resign her seat in the Senate. That would give NY Governor Elliot Spitzer the opportunity to appoint her replacement .(God forbid that a new election was called instead .Governor love this power .NJ Governor have exercised the right frequently ) Spitzer will appoint a Democrat to the seat. Assuming that Bloomberg wants her Senate seat he had no choice but to switch parties again.
Short of this the spotlight will dim on Bloomy and he will just fade away . He knows this and this is the only way to keep his star shining.
